William Eduard Ladd (1880–1967) was known as the father of pediatric surgery. He started his career after the devastating explosion of Halifax that occurred on Thursday, December 6, 1917.

HISTORY OF PAEDIATRIC SURGERY AT TVMCH

Paediatric Surgery started as a Outpatient Department in Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital in July 1980 with Dr. T.M.Vaikuntaraman MS., M Ch. (Paediatric Surgery) and Dr.Pasha MS., M Ch. (Paediatric Surgery) at the helm. Dr. T.M.Vaikuntaraman initiated the department and in October 1980, a separate 10 bedded Paediatric Surgery Ward was inaugurated by Prof M.S.Srinivasan M.S., then Professor of the Surgery and Dean. The Paediatric Surgery department, was the first sub-speciality department in Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital. Between 1982 and 1984, the department was managed by Dr.T.M.Vaikuntaraman individually. In 1986, Dr.Seeniraj MS., MCh. (Paediatric Surgery) joined him. In the year 1986. Dr.N.Dayalan joined as the first Professor of Paediatric Surgery. Subsequently, Dr.Jayachandran, Dr. Sridhar, Dr R.Chandrasekaran and Dr Hyavadana Rao served in the capacity of Professors. Dr T.M.Vaikuntaraman was Professor of Paediatric Surgery from 1994 to February 1997 and thereafter opted for a voluntary retirement. He is considered the “Father of Pediatric Surgery” in our city and served the southern districts for 17 years. In 1998, Dr.V.V.Kannan and his spouse Dr.S.Meenakshi Sundari, joined this department as Assistant professors and are still contributing with their mission. Subsequently Dr.Gurusamy Thiyagarajan, Dr.V.Kumaran, Dr. Ramesh Ratinam, Dr. R.Bhaskaran, Dr. R.Mohan, Dr.A.Athigaman and Dr S.Ramamoorthy served as Professors. Since 2007, the department is functioning in a separate Block with all facilities with two elective operation days per week. In May 2011, Dr.N.Thirumani Pandian joined as Professor and Head Of Department and Dr. R.Velmurugan as Associate Professor.

The Department of Pediatric surgery is a subspecialty of surgery involving the surgery of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. Our pediatric surgeons practice at TVMCH. Our Team recognizes that children, especially infants and newborns have different surgical needs and have lower immunity. Hence they are treated faster and with more care. Our surgical care include novel techniques and methods and has became the focal foint for children's surgery in our districts in south Tamilnadu. Our Department has subspecialties of pediatric surgery and neonatal surgery. We are preparing to take training residents in pediatric surgery. Our team specializes in pediatric nephrological surgery, pediatric urological surgery, pediatric emergency surgery, surgery, surgery involving adolescents or young adults, pediatric hepatological and gastrointestinal surgery, pediatric orthopedic surgery pediatric plastic and reconstructive surgery and pediatric oncological surgery. We have faciltities and expertise to treat pediatric diseases that may require pediatric surgery including Congenital Malformations, like lymphangioma, cleft lip and palate, esophageal atresia and trachea-esophageal fistula, hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, intestinal atresia, necrotizing enterocolitis, meconium plugs, Hirschsprung's disease, imperforate anus, undescended testes, abdominal wall defects: omphalocele, gastroschisis, hernias, chest wall deformities: pectus excavatum childhood tumors: like neuroblastoma, Wilms' tumor, Rhabdomyosarcoma, ATRT, liver tumors, teratomas etc.
