Jean-Andre Venel established the first orthopedic institute in 1780, which was the first hospital dedicated to the treatment of children's skeletal deformities. He is considered by some to be the father of orthopedics or the first true orthopedist in consideration of the establishment of his hospital and for his published methods.
Head of the Chair
Welcome, I have immense satisfaction at leading the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology at the TVMCH which was established in 1965. The department has now grwon to be the biggest Trauma care unit in South Tamilnadu, with a rapid responder team that reacts to every emergency arising along the North South Corridor. We have a excellent surgical team that has done remarkable work in replacement, rehabilitation and Spinal Surgeries.
Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, which is one of the premier and major referral center in South Tamilnadu. Large numbers of bone cancer and trauma patients are referred to the Hospital. The hospital is located on the North South Corridor and hence takes in most of the major outfalls of accidents and trauma. We are now developing a dedicated trauma unit, to respond rapidly in a emergency situation. The department has a separate Trauma Unit for holistic trauma care. On a sleepy day, there are about 10 emergencies. most of these patients need closed reduction / minor or major emergency surgeries which are done through the day in zero delay. There is a well equipped emergency operating theatre serving round the clock. The ITCU offers round the clock intensive care to poly-trauma patients. We have three separate wards of 30 beds each and a paediatric ward with 10 beds in addition to separate post operative wards and spinal care beds. Services Offered
