I am proud to head this department which has been in academic existence since 1968 and has been a postgraduate department since 1982. We presently admit 20 postgraduate residents. I cherish the moments in the departments as a Professor and Head.

Academic Graduate Program
Currently, the Department of Surgery has 35 full-time faculty participating in teaching, research and clinical activities at MMC. More than 200 undergraduate medical students and 35 postgraduates are trained annually in didactic courses and on clinical rotations. Teaching General Surgery (Clinical, Theory and Operative Surgery) in batches is done throughout the year. These include teaching during OPD classes, Ward rounds, Ward clinics, operations in OTs and Theory classes for both UGs & PGs. The clinical experience is remarkable both in the number and the variety of cases. The principles of graduated responsibility and early opportunities for independent decision-making are emphasized throughout the duration of training. The overall emphasis of the program is to provide our trainees with the opportunity to become excellent clinical surgeons, experienced teachers, and accomplished scientific investigators. On completion of graduation, the residential program helps the interns to get trained is surgical management (both elective &emergency surgery). Clinical meetings are held weekly. ACADEMIC PROGRAM – RESIDENCY
The residency training includes all facets of General Surgery including Endocrine Surgery (viz. Thyroids, Adrenals etc), Breast Surgery, Surgical Gastroenterology, General Surgery including Surgical Pathology and applied aspects and Basic Medical Sciences.The residents are also trained in
ANAESTHESIA:in Premedication, CPR, types of regional anesthesia, general anesthesia, Anaesthesia in special circumstances like an emergency, surgery metabolic derangements, Trauma, etc. and Management of pain.
RADIOLOGY AND RADIO THERAPY: Techniques of commonly performed investigations in Radiology like plain x-ray both for bone and soft tissue and technique of contrast x-rays in various systems in the body and their interpretation, Ultrasonogram, C.T. Scans, MRI scans, Dopplers, Mammograms, Fluoroscopic studies, Practical Knowledge of Radio Therapy – telecobalt, linear accelerators & other types of irradiation.
ORTHO AND TRAUMA: The resident receives one month training in Orthopedics and two months training in Traumatology including principles and management of common fracture, Immobilization and plaster technique, correction of deformities of limbs, diseases of bone and joints including tumours, Management, nerve, tendon and vascular injury, and management of Polytrauma.
CARDIO-THORACIC SURGERY: Thoraco-abdominal injuries, intercostal drain, thoracotomy and closure, surgery of oesophagus, lung and pericardium, Management of emphyema, Fundamentals of open heart surgery and Byepass surgery.
NEURO SURGERY: Management of head in injury, Diagnosis and management of intra craneal tension, Practical experience in burrhole and craniotomy.
UROLOGY:Basic knowledge of endourology, Trauma related to Urology, Basic investigative aspects of uro-dynamic studies.
PLASTIC SURGERY:Facio Maxillary injuries, Various methods of Raw area coverage including Myocutaneous flap, Reconstructive surgery for Breast and head and neck cancer, Cosmetic reconstructive surgery, Management of Burns, Bed Sore – prevention and management.
PEDIATRIC SURGERY: Congenital anomalies – gastro-intestinal, ano-rectal genitourinary tract etc, Management of intestinal obstruction in new born and childhood malignancies.

The emergency surgical team works round the clock (24 Hours) and attends to both Surgical and Trauma emergencies to the poor and needy. The Hospital is situated right of the North South Corridor of the national highway system and hence trauma and emergencies related to accidents and surgical emergencies are quite common. This includes a wide variety of poly-trauma, and surgical diseases like GI bleed, Intestinal Obstruction, Peritonitis, pancreatitis which are managed by the rapid responder team of the institute with prompt resuscitation and support. The duty surgical team performs major emergency surgeries on the patients in the emergency operation theatre, adjoining the Accident and Emergency Unit.
Elective Surgical Services
This department is a large teaching department in the state of Tamilnadu both in terms of clinical services provided and the surgery training program. The department examines over 100,000 patients each year. It performs about 10,000 major and 12000 minor operations every year. A variety of diagnostic and interventional surgical, laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures are performed. The department has a very active teaching schedule for residents besides conducting refresher courses; it also provides opportunity for observer-ship for those from other departments and elsewhere in the state and country. Services Offered by the departments include: General Surgical outpatient and inpatient care, General Surgical management both elective and emergency, Laparoscopic & Endoscopic Surgeries, Emergency trauma care, ISCU care, Surgical skill training lab with endo-surgery training, Day care surgery, and Diabetic foot clinic. Nearly 200 patients with surgical diseases of the thyroid, breast, gastrointestinal tract, gall bladder, liver, pancreas, genitor urinary system, soft tissue, skin. retro-peritoneum & retro-mediastinum are treated. The department runs special clinics for Cancers-Surgical Oncology Clinic, Diabetes-Diabetic Care Clinic, Surgical Endocrinology Clinic, and Surgical Gastroenterology Clinic. The Department has 7 major units and a ISCU Unit each headed by a Professor. OP days and timings All days in a week between 8 Am and 12 Noon.
